The Community College of Baltimore County will be hosting the Fifth Annual Conference on Acceleration on June 12-14, 2013. Workshops in Integrated Reading and Writing, the Accelerated Learning Program, Faculty Development for ALP, and Accelerated Math will be held on June 12. June 13-14 will feature breakout sessions on all aspects of acceleration.
We are excited to announce that our plenary speakers this year will be Dr. Keith Gilyard and Dr. Hunter Boylan.
A two-time recipient of an American Book Award, Keith Gilyard has lectured widely on language, literature, education, and civic affairs over the course of his career as a poet, scholar, and educator. Long active in national organizations, Gilyard headed the Conference on College Composition and Communication (CCCC) in 2000 and served as president of the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) in 2012.
Dr. Gilyard will be speaking on June 13th.
Gilyard grew up in New York and earned graduate degrees at Columbia University and New York University. He taught at Medgar Evers College-CUNY and at Syracuse University before joining the faculty of Penn State in 1999. He has also held visiting appointments at New York University, the University of California-Berkeley, and University of Louisville.
In addition to publishing numerous essays, Gilyard has authored or edited seventeen books, including the education memoir Voices of the Self: A Study of Language Competence (1991), Let’s Flip the Script: An African American Discourse on Language, Literature, and Learning (1996), Race, Rhetoric, and Composition (1999), Rhetoric and Ethnicity (2004), Rhetorical Choices: A Reader for Writers (2004/2007), Composition and Cornel West: Notes toward a Deep Democracy (2008), Conversations in Cultural Rhetoric and Composition (2009), and True to the
Language Game: African American Discourse, Cultural Politics, and Pedagogy (2011).

Dr. Hunter Boylan is Director of the National Center for Developmental Education and Professor of Higher Education at Appalachian State University. He has served as Director of the Kellogg Institute, President of the National Association for Developmental Education, Editor of Research in Developmental Education, and Director of the nation’s first Doctoral Program in Developmental Education at Grambling State University. He also chaired the American Council of Developmental Education Associations from 1996 to 2007 and organized the first national study of developmental education. During his career he has served as an assistant dean of men, worked with street gangs, directed a learning center, worked in TRIO programs, coordinated academic advising programs for minority students, taught reading and student success courses, and been a visiting scholar at Penn State University.
Dr. Boylan received his Ph.D. in higher education from Bowling Green State University, M.Ed. in counseling from Temple University, and B.A. in political science and history from Miami University in Ohio. He is the author or co-author of 7 books and over 100 articles and book chapters on developmental education. He has delivered over 270 conference presentations, speeches, and workshops at regional, national, and international conferences and has received over $4,000,000 in grants from government and foundation sources. He has served on the editorial boards of six professional journals and on the advisory boards of the National Center for Postsecondary Research, the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, the Council for the Advancement of Adult Literacy, the National Association for Developmental Education, the Center for Research on Developmental Education and Urban Literacy, the National College Transitions Network, the Council on Learning Assistance and Developmental Education, and the International Conference on Lifelong Learning. His comments have been quoted in the New York Times, Washington Post, Baltimore Sun, Chicago Tribune, USA Today, Los Angeles Times, Chronicle of Higher Education, Community College Week, Inside Higher Education, Austin American, Houston Chronicle, Philadelphia Inquirer, Columbus Dispatch, and Boston Globe.
Dr. Boylan’s hobbies and interests include: Canoeing, gourmet cooking, collecting and restoring military firearms, fishing, wine collecting and tasting, classical and folk music, cycling, and working out. His most recent accomplishment: the National College Learning Center Association’s research scholarship was named the “Hunter R. Boylan Research Award” in recognition of his contributions to research in the field. His favorite saying is “Good judgment comes from experience and experience comes from bad judgment.
