Abstract:
ModMath, a computer-assisted, modularized approach to developmental math built using Pearson’s MyMathLab, was developed by math faculty at Tarrant County College. ModMath is being evaluated by MDRC, an independent, non-profit research organization. Presenters will discuss the design and implementation of ModMath, as well as early estimates of the program’s effectiveness.

Abstract:
This interactive workshop will explore how instructors teaching an accelerated writing class can prepare their ESL students for a university-wide developmental exit essay writing test while addressing critical issues of importance in society, such as race, gender, class, and global issues. Workshop participants will work with each other, authentic student essays, and news articles to create classroom activities that will enhance ESL students’ academic and critical thinking skills as well as their ability to pass the test.

“Backward Design: Insights into Reading, Writing and Research at SBCC” Presentation of Film with Discussions
Why do many of our students come to class without having done their assigned reading? What struggles do our students face when writing and conducting research? How can we help develop our students’ critical thinking skills?
Seventeen SBCC instructors from social sciences, arts, sciences and humanities participated in the development of this film exploring these questions and possible solutions. The film is paused after each section for discussion.
