The CCBC Accelerated Learning Project (ALP) Garners $500,000 Kresge Foundation Grant

The Community College of Baltimore County President Sandra L. Kurtinitis announced this week that CCBC has been awarded a $500,000 grant from The Kresge Foundation to support and expand its innovative developmental writing program, the Accelerated Learning Program (ALP). Today, ALP has been replicated at more than 80 colleges nationwide, with several states beginning statewide adoption.  The Kresge Foundation ALP Grant provides the financial support to continue the national expansion of the program, while providing strong professional development and support for current ALP faculty from CCBC as well as from participating schools nationwide.

Based in metropolitan Detroit, The Kresge Foundation (www.kresge.org)is a $3.1 billion private foundation that seeks to influence the quality of life for future generations; fostering greater access to and success in postsecondary education for low-income, minority and first-generation college students is the focus of Kresge’s Education grantmaking. In 2011, Kresge awarded more than $22 million in grants to support higher education, with half benefiting U.S. community colleges.

The goals of the grant focus on three elements:  development of national ALP resources, assessment of national ALP programs through Achieving the Dream (www.achievingthedream.org), and a statewide ALP pilot and replication project in the state of Michigan.
